School Uniforms
First introduced in large scale in the sixteenth century during the reign of Henry VIII, the school uniform has spread all over the world and is now a standard feature of schools of almost all countries. This is especially the case in the UK, where this tradition first took root, and in many public schools such as Eton and Harrow, the history of their uniforms is quite interesting. So, without further a due, here is what pupils wear in a public school in the UK.
Firstly, we have the formal uniform you wear to lessons with and usually the most distinctive uniform for the school. On average, this consist of a blazer with the school's coat of arms on it, a pair of dress trousers, a shirt, a school tie, and perhaps a coat or a jumper for the colder months for boys, and the same but with long skirts or kilts for girls (This is also the typical uniform you will see in a state school). However, some schools have more unique and distinctive uniforms for their pupils to wear. In Eton College, the school uniform consists of a full morning dress with an Etonian shirt and collar which was popularised in the nineteenth century; and in Harrow, the uniform is similar to most other schools but also consists of their famous wide straw-boater hat which students are required to wear outdoors. Other notable uniforms include the one of Winchester College which includes the scholar's gown instead of a blazer and the Royal Hospital School which has a sailor's suit as their uniform. But the most distinctive of them all is the 450-year-old uniform of Christ's Hospital School, which consists of an outer blue coat, breeches for boy sand pleated skirts for girls, white shirt, yellow socks and a leather belt.
In games, schools also have their own unique games kit. For the Michaelmas and Lent term where male pupils play rugby and hockey/football, and female students play Hockey and Netball, we will wear our games kit which is basically a patterned rugby shirt with the school coat of arms, a pair of rugby shorts and patterned rugby socks, in the same patterned and colour as the rugby shirt. However, for the Summer term when cricket is played, white polo cricket shirt with long white cricket trousers is worn with an optional cricket jumper. And of course for any other sports such as rowing, tennis, shooting or horse riding, other school sports kit is worn.
In conclusion, there is a vast and diverse variety of school uniforms in the UK, all slightly different from the other but all to serve the same purpose of making sure that no discrimination can be done based on people's outfits and to enforce pupils to stay on their best behaviour while also celebrating the institution's rich and interesting history.
