When I first came to the UK, I was a boarder in Clifton. It was also my first time leaving both of my parents to live in a foreign country for a long period of time, and by that, I must say my first week there was pretty intimidating. But first, we need to understand the house system. In the UK and other western countries, pupils are split into houses on entry. Varying on schools, houses can be physical buildings that the pupil of that house register, change and do extra study, or just a system the school divides the students in, which helps them to more easily organise events, primarily sports and music. In Clifton, the houses are buildings that are dotted around the campus separated by gender. There are four boys' houses and four girls' houses, of which two houses are boarding houses in the Preparatory school and in the upper school there are seven boys' houses and five girls' houses, of which seven are boarding houses.
I stayed in Hartnell's house when I first came, the house was clean and well managed and strict discipline was applied to keep us behaved. When I was there, the dorms were split into year groups, our dorm, which is on the farthest of the top floor, is a large room with beds arranged sideways next to the wall and windows on all sides with a roomy inner section for us to play on. I shared the room with four other fellow boarders: Boja and David from Spain, Llewelyn from Wales, and Archie, who's parents were in the military. A reason why boarding is so fun and interesting is because of the diversity of the boarders. There are people from all over the world, from Spain to Russia, and also some from China as well, from many different backgrounds of life. I still can remember when we would all gather around a fellow Spanish pupil for food as his family sends him a few sticks of their local chorizo sausages every two months or so and he would share it with us.
All meals were eaten in school which every morning and every evening we have to walk up to the upper school hall as a house, some times more frantic than others and our free time were usually spent running and fooling around on the school field, Whatley or during the weekends, play some games on our phones or watch a movie together. Although we have school and games on Saturday which lasts the whole morning, or if you have a match, until four o'clock in the afternoon, the weekends are still quite fun as the school arranges exertions to parks and other places on Sundays every two weeks and we would be allowed to have sweets and snacks we brought from home.
For me, boarding is a great way to connect with friends and is extremely fun and enjoyable. And of course, homesickness still kicks in some times but the teacher and matrons are there to help. Boarding houses are like a second home and it's an unforgettable experience of a lifetime.
ps - I was in year five when I boarded, which, back then homework and schoolwork were minimum. But for people in higher years, there are two hours plus studying time to do your homework or extra studies.
