In Europe and the US, institutions are a place of academic education but also sporting and extra-curriculum rivalry and competition within the school, but mostly between institutions. Sport and any other extra - curriculum interests are highly valued and even with the academic education, the pupils are given a choice to pick subjects to their highest interest (except for some compulsory ones). Personally, I really enjoy this sense of competition as it brings your team or house or school together to work in unison. And for me, these pursuits are fencing and debating or MUN.
I am not that great of a sportsman compared to other students in the school; I don't have the big size for rugby, nor the patience for cricket, so for a while when I first came, games is something I don't really enjoy-until I found fencing. There's something special about fencing to me; the fast-paced movement, the exhilarating hits and parries, the adrenalin rush of winning... Fencing for me is the perfect balance of speed and intensity while having very little physical contact which I really enjoyed and being able to do it instead of games is just perfect for me. Luckily for me, the fencing club I go and the coach who coaches me is the same club and coach for the school, so the location doesn't change which in the long term is very useful and my progress can be improved more efficiently.
I must confess that I have no talent at all for public speaking, in fact, quite the opposite until two years ago. I first discovered debating when I moved to Bristol Grammar School around two years ago; the school offers a debating and MUN club, which Clifton did not for its prep school, and I joined just out of interest. MUN or Model United Nations is basically what the name suggested; it's a mock UN with debtors or delegates playing the role of a country and debate in the interest of it. The formate of the debate is almost exactly the same as the real United Nations, which delegates write resolutions and amendments for a set topic; debate and vote to get the resolution passed or failed, depending on your country's views; and make alliances with other delegates to get support. Our school is particularly strong at this, and for most of the conferences I've been to, our top country, under the leadership of our secretary-general - Jay, always seems to bring some sort of a shield or a trophy back to school. MUN really boosted my confidence in a fun and progressive manner and I am now winning more and higher awards in the conferences and also more confident in presentations and speaking tests in school.
Clubs and activities to me are fun and exciting, but also a great escape from the day to day learning and lessons; all of the worries and pressure and work can be all released in a fencing match, and let me live in the moment. After all, we only have one childhood, so why not do something new or something you are interested.
