Lifestyle and environment is a key factor in the quality of one's life and of course, living on the other side of the earth, British lifestyle is a bit different than the ones in China. Of course, I'm not saying that one is far superior and better than the other in every way as living anywhere have benefits and restrictions; but for many people coming to the UK, there is always some cultural differences to adapt to, regardless of your nationality.

Firstly, let's address the speed of things. In the UK, everything is slower; the delivery is slower, things get done slower, public transport takes more time... But for most of the times, this is rather relaxing as life slows down and one can have more time thinking and enjoy the moment as it is. One can simply have more time to spend on their hobbies without being distracted from the day to day work on the weekends and holidays, certainly for my teachers as they never reply an email on breaks, and also have time to reflect and think about one's choices and how to improve as a person in general. But, from my experience, when back in China, one does not have the time to do that: it's either school, tuition or sleep, and even now when I go back,  I can feel the urgency and rush even though I'm on holiday. Of course, this has many benefits including the urgency to learn more and to do more, but also in day to day matters like the extremely fast free delivery which in the UK would be impossible to get even if you pay the highest premium and extremely short response time from people when something is asked compared to a response time which could take days. But, positive or negative, this is definitely something which needs adapting.

The use of mobile phones is also something which needs addressing;  although even in the UK, we criticise the over usage of our phones and how the younger generations use it too much and it causes a negative impact and all the topic surrounding it, this is definitely a bigger problem in China in my opinion. I can see everyone swiping on their phone where ever I go - walking on the streets, in the underground, in restaurants, and although you can see some resemblance in London, the usage of devices is way less, which I really like. Sometimes devices make you miss all the interesting things happening around you and restricts you from connecting with other people which, in my opinion, is very important. On top of that, dining should be about eating and enjoying the company of your friends and family, and having your phone out, even on the table is rude, anti-social and disrespectful to people around you- this is quite the case in Britain. Although our devices make our lives a lot easier and more entertaining in some ways and having 5G everywhere is definitely something I want in the UK, phones should be used responsibly, especially here.

To finish up, British life is about enjoyment, satisfaction and fuffilment; although in many ways British and Chinese culture are similar, traditionalism and respect are valued very highly in society. For the past five weeks, we've been through the positives and not so positives of UK's education, living and society. I hope that this short introduction is useful and practical, and I will see you next week, where I would start talking more about day to day life as a young student living in the UK.
