Quarantine is somehow getting normal to me, the blurred indefinable days is getting into some sort of a routine and although with numbers climbing steeply, I can't really feel the intensity around me as Britain starts to approach the peak of infections and death. Every week all seemed the same, the surrounding is hardly changing, except for the days getting longer and warmer, and I am slowly but surely adapting to the hermit lifestyle. But still, even getting used to staying at home, I have just realised a big drawback to all the quarantine- lack of literature.

To be completely honest, I have never been a very avid reader; although I now I do read around half a dozen novels every year, I've never been really into reading form a young age. This aside, I think I really started to read more when I was in year seven and year eight; at the time, we were about to study a book called "Animal Farm" by George Orwell and just out of curiosity, I got the book thinking it would be a good short read as was only around two hundred pages long. And I really enjoyed it.

You see, before this, all the books I read were children's novels or of a similar kind. These books are designed purely to create a story for the child to blissfully enjoy but have no meaning or intentions behind it. There aren't any political or philosophical motives or ideas behind the novel and the books were wrote purely for its story, not for any reflection of the real world; and even those stories, were of the very lighthearted and unrealistic ones. Dystopian and realism was an eye-opener for me, although the story is dark and is filled with lots of philosophical ideas, I really enjoyed it and Orwell became one of my favourite authors. Along this time, I also discovered the Great Gatsby, by F. Scott. Fitzgerald; the book was so interesting, both the storyline and the social reflections behinds it- the pursuit and the darker side of the 'American Dream', it became my favourite novel by far; I even read it four times, each time with a different approach.

Till now, my book choice is still very much the same as the one I had in year eight: the classics or recommendations from teachers. Now I read more Dickens and recently quite a lot of Agatha Christie's Poirot series as although they are written just for the story, the detective novels are extremely pleasant to read and are a great way to readjust after a long Orwell's or Dickens novel.

Reading had opened my eyes to many fabulous ideas and theologies, even my interest in politics and history is somewhat due to reading these classics. Although I can't really call myself an "avid reader" as I still need much determination to read every week and finish a novel in an acceptable time, reading had really changed my life and made me into more educated and informed human being.
