Before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, my family and I travelled quite a bit; we would usually go during the three longer school holidays, to somewhere new and try to experience the local lifestyles and enjoy the unique landscape of that region. I think because of this, we hardly stayed in well-prepared hotels and go on group excursions with a travel company, but rather stay in more family-based and small residences and explore the country or region in a rented car. For us, going off the beaten path and exploring the culture is way more interesting and exciting than just floating in a rubber ring in the hotel swimming pool for the entire trip.
One of the most memorable places I've been and certainly the most adventurous one was Iceland. Iceland is located between the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean next to Greenland, the Island is mainly outside of the Arctic circle and also sits on a constructive tectonic boundary between the Eurasian Plate and the North American Plate. We first arrived in Reykjavik, the capital; although the day of arrival was a weekday, the streets looked deserted with hardly any people, which definitely agreed with their population of 364,134 people as it's thirty-six times less than the population of London alone. The next day, we toured around Reykjavik, a beautiful city, and after dinner, we drove to the famous Blue Lagoon Spa. The Spa is a geothermal natural spring with light blue water surrounded by moss-covered igneous rock terrain, which was all covered in snow as we went in December. The experience was sensational, the water was very warm which was surprising given that it's purely powered by geothermal energy and the thing that made the whole experience even better was that it started to snow, which lifted the experience to a whole new level. Unfortunately, the following days weren't nearly as calm and relaxing; strong blizzards followed us where ever we go, which made driving extremely dangerous as you can only see around two meters in front of you and the wind was shaking the car constantly. But luckily, when we arrived at a stop, the snow stopped and we are able to see the senary with little obstruction. We saw geysers and hot springs along the golden circle, and also saw the opening between the plates and walked on the expanding bridge that connected Europe and America. After another treacherous day of driving, we arrived at the black sand beach. The strong wave hitting against the black sand was majestic and stunning, and made all of that harsh driving worthwhile.
We left each and every place we went knowing a bit more and understanding a bit deeper with their culture and their point of view of matters. For me, this is all travelling should be about: learning, learning their culture, learning their tradition and history and understanding their ideas and views.
