It's exam week next week, the time when the school change the time table, the teachers depressed over the hundreds of papers they have to mark, and the week when you feel that your adrenaline level is too high constantly. Exams had never really been fully tamed by me, even though I took many of them and most came out pretty well, every exam week gives me the nerve and makes me feel like I messed up all of them. But unfortunately, for my exams next year, it's going to be way more formal and important than any exams I've ever taken - the GCSEs.

The GCSE or General Certificate of Secondary Education is a qualification course for Secondary Education. Started in 1888, the course is done by many exam boards like Edexcel, AQA and Cambridge International, who print their own textbooks and other educational materials and also publishes GCSE exams for their courses, which all are taken publicly around the UK at the same time (from the start to the end of June of Year Eleven). There is a wide selection of subjects in the GCSE course ranging from Art to Sports Studies, but some subjects are compulsory, these include English Language and Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Chemistry, but also Religious Studies, though this is enforced in some schools, not with the exam board. The course also offers different levels of qualifications, there is the full grade one to nine higher level Exam, which includes all everything in the course, but a foundation grade one to five exam paper is also available for less enthusiastic and motivated students. In addition, the course also has an option for Combined Science, which condenses the three sciences into two, though most private institutions tend to not offer the foundation course nor the Combined science unless they deemed it necessary as one can only achieve grade 5 which is a C, thus bringing the school average down.

For me, I chose French, History, Music, Business Studies, Computing and Further Mathematics as my subjects as I genuinely have a fair amount of interest in them. But, subjects choosing is not as easy as it seems and many people turned out to dislike and fall out of interest in their chosen subjects in very little time. When I was choosing for my subjects in Year nine, my teacher told us not necessarily chose the one you are most confident in nor the one you think is the easiest to do; she said that a good subject is one that can keep you interested enough to be motivated throughout the course rather than the one you are currently the best at, as when the content gets harder, it's the interest for the subjects you're studying that gets you through the course.

To conclude, although the GCSEs are seen by many to be a relatively easy course, especially for the maths and the sciences, the vast range of subjects and the sheer number of them(normally 12 subjects) makes them less easy and straight forward than it looks. Just like the GCSEs, life somewhat is the same, there is a range of things that bothers you and cause problems and the only way to push through everything is to do the things you are interested, maybe those things look less potential or pay less, one only gets inspiration when doing the things they are interested in.
