Just a few months ago amid the lockdown and homeschooling, my friend reintroduced me to the James Bond series. Before this, my relationship with the British spy franchise (and yes, James Bond is British, not American) is quite distant, and I've only watched a few of its film under the peer pressure of my friends. But this time, I finally discovered the beauty and timelessness of these movies after eventually finishing watching all twenty-six of them, and now I can finally call myself a Bond fan.
The Bond franchise first took inspiration from Ian Fleming’s best-selling books of the same name, their first film - Dr No, first premiered in 1962, staring Sean Connery as Bond. Throughout the years, we have seen the come and go with now six bond actors with the latest being Daniel Craig, who is told to be leaving the role after his latest Bond movie which is due to be released, "No Time to Die", which is delayed by the pandemic from showings in February and March this year to September or on to next year. But why does the 007 character so many viewers even though the series is almost fifty years old?
Firstly, there's his sense of style. James Bond has never seemed unstylish or out of fashion since their first film, even to today's standards; he is almost always seemed to be wearing a suit or at least a polo or a casual shirt, which elevate him from the crowd; and he rarely gets the rules of formal dress wrong, whether he is wearing a tuxedo at a black-tie event, wearing a three-piece suit to an MI6 meeting or attending his CIA friend, Felix's wedding sporting a full morning suit. In all situations, he is shown as being casually dapper and smart but also prepared for the worst situation. When he is wearing a suit, the colour of the suit is conservative, being grey, blue or navy, and black; and his ties and accessories are also muted, which creates a good foundation that compliments his character of being a man of action, rather than overshadowing him.
The second and most important point is his charisma and his representation of masculinity in our culture. Firstly, he is effortlessly and insanely capable - he knows how to fly a plane, drive a tank, mastered the art of shooting and even poker, and also know how to tango and sailing, while all of these skills needed years of practice and many failures behind it but we never see that side. Another aspect is his lack of reactiveness when he is not in danger; when he gets teased or insulted or even rejected by a woman, he doesn't get upset or worked up, he keeps calm and even jokes a little which makes him so attractive. And finally, there is his will power and the fact that he sticks to his mission and idea in the midst of pain and for him even death; he was many times tortured but he never gave in, and with all the odds stacked against him, he sticks to his goals up to the end, which makes everyone more or less admire him.
In conclusion, what made 007 so great and such an iconic figure is his good sense of style and also his charisma and will. What we can learn from him is that we no matter all the hardships, sticking to your ambition or mission is what make you successful in the end and also don't make other people's rejection and insult shape you and be unreactive. We can also take from all the Bond films that the classic style and fashion never go out of style and a more formal wardrobe elevates you and make you more confident.
A few good bonds movies that I recommend are:
·Casino Royale (2006)
·The Spy who loved me
·Skyfall
·Gold Finger
·GoldenEye
·Licence to Kill
