Although summer in Britain is not the longest in the world nor is the weather exceptional, as children and teenagers we long for those short two months of absolute freedom, where there is no school nor any work to do. But if one is not going on holiday or frequently outing with friends, these two months can be awfully tedious as well, which is why there is a large and growing popularity of summer activity in Europe and the US, where the children go off and enjoy their youth while their parents relax in their absence.

In Britain, the most popular summer boarding camps are activity and outdoors based. They offer hundreds of activities for the camper to choose from, including treetop adventure, canoeing, outdoor climbing (for older aged campers) and mountain biking, and the accommodation provided these camps are plain and modest, averagely with four or more people per room with a shared bathroom. Of course, for many people, both in China and the UK, the plain accommodation of these camps might seem to be uncomfortable, but the core concepts behind these camps are for the campers to have fun, learn teamwork, reinforce their self-confidence and step out of one's comfort zone by trying something new, while also at the end appreciate home, their parents and their belongings.

I personally went to several camps, the first being an outdoors activity camp described in the previous paragraph. At the time, I was only twelve, I had no worries and no schoolwork - my only goal is to have fun and enjoy myself. And so I did; with the limitless activities including golf and offshore fishing, the week flew past with me being exhausted every night. Another more recent camp I've been to is an intensive fencing course last year, organised by my coaches. We trained every day from nine in the morning, to eight in the evening in three sessions with long breaks only for meals. I can still vividly remember the amount of pain and tiredness everyone is suffering on the first day as we hadn't had this much of exercise in a long while, but the days got easier as our bodies adapted to the stress.

But if you are not interested in sports and outdoor activities, or you want to visit famous places in the UK as you are coming for the first time, summer language schools are a great choice as well. Here at Top UK Schools, the summer camps we offer is set in real private schools such as my old school, Clifton College, but also Rugby school and Imperial College. The courses include outdoors activities and sports like cricket and football, just like a normal English summer camp, but it also provides English language courses in the school's classrooms, which gives a taste of what studying in the UK actually feels like, as the classrooms and teaching are completely different to China. On top of this, you can also add culture courses like group etiquette lessons with William Hanson, a leading etiquette connoisseur in the UK. I have personally listened and translated his course once and I couldn't recommend it more; in his lessons, he teaches one to behave properly up to the finest detail while also sharing his own experiences throughout.

To sum up, summer is the time to enjoy and play, not, in my opinion, to take an overload of lessons accompanied by piles of homework. Camps completely embodies this concept; it teaches you teamwork, to step out of your comfort zone and to try something new while building your confidence in day to day life, which I think these skills are of equal importance to its academic counterpart.
