School has started. After six months of remote learning, desperate waiting and being locked up in the borders of one's home, we are finally allowed to go back to school and return somewhat back to normal. We were all very excited; we are finally allowed to enjoy a more efficient learning schedule and also hang out with our friends as we used to in the old days. But I guess is this naivety and enthusiasm that made us not realise the grime reality and difficulty of starting school amid the pandemic and made us all somewhat disappointed on our first day back last Friday, when our teacher told us that things are in fact very different from before.
Let’s first start with the classrooms. Before, our school, like other public and state schools alike, have specific buildings for each department. We have a Science wing, English building, Maths building, two humanities houses and two language houses. This means we have to walk between lessons, usually across the school, to reach our next one which isn't very fun when you accidentally left something in your last lesson. This is however no longer the case as each year is located in a different part of the school ( for us, it's the two language houses), and most of our lessons are taught in the buildings except for the ones that needed special equipment such as the sciences, art, music, sports and design technology. This is not particularly a bad thing as we don't have to travel as much with our pretty heavy bags but on the other hand, we can feel a little bit more claustrophobic and it feels already a bit repetitive.
Secondly, there is also a big change in our timetables. Before, every year group have the same timetable structure; we have four one hour lessons in the morning with a break in the middle, and after lunch, we have one more lesson to finish the day at four. Now, to separate the year groups apart from each other, three of our days are changed to have a break just after the first lesson following by two more and then two more after lunch. This means that unfortunately, all clubs are cancelled and one of my favourite school club - Model United Nation - is unable to happen and so applies for the events as well. This was a particularly big blow for us as I was really looking forward to debating with new sixth formers this year and also going to events and winning awards. But on the bright side, we can have lunch early on some days of the week at twelve-thirty which in at least my friends and my opinions, is a better time to have lunch.
Finally, the last major thing with school is the heavy use of iPads. Unlike most other schools, our schools give students in the senior school (Year 7 to Year 11) iPads, and before the pandemic, a little part of our homework and schools is done on them. When the virus struck and lockdown began, all of our work including our tests is conducted over our iPad using the Microsoft software Onenote. As school opens again, I was quite surprised that the school are still pushing for the use of Onenote for all of our work and also the rule that the paperwork handed out by the teacher must go through a seventy-two hour "quarantine". This is actually quite useful for us as we can carry fewer books to school and also have every subject work one platform.
For better or for worst, this time is undoubtedly very different to before and we are forced to accept and adapt to those changes. But we must not be stuck in the past both physically and mentally and bicker about the past. We must get back to a relative normally, even though this might mean making some sacrifices, and work together to overcome this strange time.
ps - We have to wear masks for everything except for lunch. I didn't mention this because I think it’s now a global standard to wear masks in public.
