"He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past" - George Orwell. Although history was and presumably always will be written by the victors and the ones in prominence and power, and no history is completely true and unbiased - which begs the question of learning it in the first place - history is still one of the most important and popular subjects (at lease for GCSE).
However, for many international students, History, alongside some other subjects, are always left out because of its lengthy content and essay questions, sometimes unnecessarily. I'm personally a history student myself and I really enjoy this subject and I think that it's a shame so many people are not taking it, so let's go through the specification and question types to see if history is really as hard or as uninteresting as you think.
Although not all exam board shares identical specification, most of the topics in it are similar. In GCSE syllabuses, the topics usually contain half of British history between 1064 - 1914, with topics such as Norman conquest, rule of Henry VIII, the evolution of Medicine in Britain c1250-present, Britain and its empire, and changes in the British society c1250-present. And also half of world history, such as the Russian Revolution, the World Wars, the Cold War, the Chinese Revolution, and also Middle-western conflicts in the latter half of the 19th century. However, if your school uses an IGCSE syllabus or you are taking the IGCSE course, History is more global and less about Britain, with most common topics being the Cold War, Vietnam War and Nazi Germany.
Talking about exams and questions, all of the questions types are similar and follow similar mark schemes and there are usually 6 marks, 8 marks and 16 marks questions. With the 6 mark questions, you are given a source and asked how much this source tells about a historical event, eg." What impressions does this source give about Hitler's leadership in the Munich Putsch?". The 8 mark questions have a few variants; in my syllabus, AQA IGCSE, the question can either be a disruption of 2 effects of an event, eg. "Give two effects of the Munich Putsch on the Nazi Party"; or a source comparison question when you have to compare sources, eg. " How much does Source A support Source B on the defeat of the French in Vietnam?". Finally, there is the 16 mark question; this is usually a discussion question about a statement such as "Do you agree that the Reichstag fire is the most important cause to Hitler's rise in power?". With the papers in general, AQA has two papers, Edexcel has 3 papers, and Cambridge International has 2 papers. All papers are generally between 1h30m and 2h long.
In conclusion, History is a very interesting, useful, and sophisticated subject, and it can be applied in a lot of career paths. I personally chose History because of the importance of it and how we should never forget the past and our past mistakes. Only by learning the past, can we change and make better the future, and I'm extremely glad that I continued this subject into GCSE, and I look forward to taking it to A-level. So, is history for you?
